Phantoms vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins: Third Period
Now we have 8:38 remaining in the third, and Muny has had to be sharp. The Penguins seriously want to get that goal back, and they are not going away quietly. SOG are Phantoms 25, Penguins 27, so we have had relatively the same number of opportunities in the third period so far.
Unfortunately, we just got a Delay of Game penalty -- darn that freaking rule -- when Kalinski's clearing attempt cleared the glass instead and became a souvenir for someone behind the bench. Giroux and Ross are out with Syvret and Guenin. They were soon followed by Raduns and Kane, but the same D pair remained on the ice. Munroe ugs the post, so the ensuing SOG hit him squarely on the pads with a loud thud. We had a few interesting moments when both teams were playing Hot Potato with the puck, but finally Syvret got hold of it and bounced it up the slot and across the blue line, killing extra seconds.
Guenin laid out flaton the ice to block a shot. You knew I wasn't going to get through a game without observing that at least once. :) OMG though, we have had two shots go straight through the crease, including one that I don't know how it didn't ping off a skate and in. We neeeeeed a clear.
And we got one. THANK GOD. My flipping bood pressure can only take so much of this.
Now Laliberte picked off a pass and he and Maroon are headed the other way. We finally have gotten set up in the other end for a while, even though not a lot has come of it. Oh, never mind, an offensive-zone draw has come of it. :) I'll take it. And I'll take the NEXT offensive-zone draw that was generated by the Penguins icing the puck. That'll work. We have 3:05 left, so the more time we spend in front of John Curry, the less time the Pens have to try and tie the game.
The Phantoms really do look like they're going into a shutdown mode. I hate to use that four-lettered word T-R-A-P, so let's just say that we have three guys ranged across the Neutral Zone to impede the Pens' progress any time they try to break out. So far it has been working, as we have been intercepting passes and dump-in attempts and dumping them right back out.
There are less than two minutes left now, and Guenin just laid down in the slot to block another shot attempt. With 1:29 remaining, we have iced the puck and the Penguins have pulled Curry for the extra skater. Kane Ross, Giroux, aGuenin, and Syvret are on the ice, and coach is calling a timeout.
SOG are Phantoms 25, Pens 28. Neither goalie has seen rubber since the save I mentoned that went thud off Munroe's pads.
Giroux stole the puck, knocking Caputi down, and sprang Kane who went full tilt to the Pens end. His shot on the empty goal went wide. The puck wound up down in front of Scotty again, but Munroe froze it with his glove with 49.7 seconds remaining. Now it's the Penguins' turn to call a timeout.
This final minute is going to be the death of me. We have had several clearing attempts, none of which have crossed the unprintable blue line. Finally, after a defensive-zone draw, Syvret decided to chip it off the half-boards and we FINALLY got the miserable thing the heck out. We came semi-close to scoring, but time ran out before we could add an insurance goal to our tally.
The final score was Phantoms 2, Penguins 1, and unlike the last time we saw this team, the action was evenly matched. The stars of the game were pretty fitting -- the two goaltenders and the scorer of the GWG:
#3: John Curry
#2 Scott Munroe
#1 Claude Giroux
The Phantoms have a rare midweek home game coming up on Wednesday the 17th.
Phantoms vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins: Second Period
Laliberte took a booming shot on goal, but John Curry deflected it up into the netting. Matsy's lne will get an offensive zone draw. Guenin and Syvret are our D. Oh, get a LIFE, referee, Maroon didn't even touch him! We lost that faceoff, and at some point during his pursuit of the puck carrier, it was deemed he held onto the opponent. I beg to differ, as do the Phantoms Phaithful in the house.
ANYway. Our first two forwards out were Raduns and Kalinski. Raduns has a ful cage on his face, to protect a broken nose. Scotty has been making life look interesting over there between the pipes, but as long as he's keeping a part of himself between puck and net, it's all good. One of our D broke a stick, and a forward handed his stick off in return, but I couldn't see who either of them was. (Time for new glasses, methinks.) Though we spend the entire penalty n front of Munroe, we prevented a PP goal from going in.
Unfortunately, on the next shift following our return to even strength, we had an even-strength goal go in. Boy, there are a lot of Penguins fans in here. Boo. The score is now tied 1-1, and the Penguins are now outshooting us 16-15. We have only had one shot in this period so far, with 13:44 left. We are going to have to tilt the ice back toward the western end of the rink, pronto.
OH, GUENIN -- as I was typing that, he let loose a freaking CANNON from the pont that John Curry nearly flubbed. We came inches from regaining the lead. Ice shot. Sorry to say, on the ensung faceoff the play proceeded right back down to keep Munroe company again. This is getting ridiculous. After spending nearly the whole frst period on the attack, we have spent almost NONE of this period outside our zone. Come on, guys, let's go.
Here comes Ratchuk with Kalnski, Bellamy, and Matsumoto (who seems to be a steady forward with the fourth ine tonight, rather than rotating those duties with other centers). Whatever the Pens were doing to try and stop us, the ref took issue with it and is sending a Penguin to the box. PP for us. Ross's line, plus Syvret and DeSantis. Ross is circling the net like a shark, looking for rebounds, but so far we haven't actually shot the puck yet.
Dratted Jaffrey got hold of the puck when our guy at the point fell down, and took a shot, before we got the puck back and headed back to the Pens' end. We had a couple of nice goalmouth scrambles, but unfortunately none ended with a puck across the goal line. At the end of the PP, the SOG are Phantoms 18, Penguins 19.
Clackson just imbedded Caputi into the boards, right next to the Phantoms bench. Caputi skated back toward his bench holding his nose. He's likely to feel that tomorrow. However, since he's still on the ice for thenext shift, he can't have been dented too badly.
I like how Ratchuk is looking in this game. He's had some nice plays at both ends of the ice.
We are headed to the PK with 6:01 left in the period. SOG are even at 19.
Kalinsk and raduns are our first PK unit today, with Syvret and Guenin. Scotty has been making me nervous with some unorthodox-looking saves, some of which have been made with him practically flat on the ice, but by gosh the puck is staying out so I'm not complaining. I do want him to make himself as big as possible in net, though, as he's a good-sized guy and he's capable of blocking plenty of net just by Being There. At the end of the PK, the SOG are Phantoms 20, Pens 21.
Yet again, when we returned to even strength we continued to be stuck in our own end. I am not liking how the Pens keep finding ways to keep us hemmed in,
Guenin just dumped Caputi to the ice at the half boards. Dang, Caputi is going to be one big bruise by this time tomorrow at this reate. Now here goes Ross with Giroux, trying to attack. A Penguin laid a just-barely-legal hit on Giroux. Neither of them had the puck, but they were both heading toward it. Had they been a bit farther from the loose disk, that could have been interference. But I guess they were close enough for the ref to overlook it. (Like he overlooked when Cote, lying on the ice, took down Ross by pinning his legs around Ross's legs during our PP earlier in this period. The kids behind me thought it was funny when I called the ref a pinhead. But I digress.)
The period is over. SOG at the end of the second: Phantoms 20, Penguins 21.
Phantoms vs. Wilkes-Berre/Scranton Penguins 12-14-08: First Period
Startng Lineup: Munroe, Guenin, Syvret, Ross, Giroux, Kane
OMG -- a pump video! The first time all season that we've had one at the Spectrum!
Our second line, after the starters, was Matsumoto, Maroon, Laliberte. We have seven D dressed: Bartulis, D'Amour, Ratchuk, Guenin, DeSantis, Syvret, Curry.
Next up, Raduns, Szwez, Clackson. Then Bellamy, Kalinski, Matsumoto (presumably, these two are the extra forwards for the night, as they're being double-shifted with Matsumoto right now.
The Phantoms will now get the first PP with 15:58 remaining in the period and the SOG Phantoms 3, Penguiins 2.
Our first PP unit consists of Girous, Ross, Kane, Syvret, DeSantis. Ross is crashing the net, but the Pens' Curry didn't gie up a rebound. Instead he froze the puck. With 54 seconds remaining in the PP, we went to a two-man PP. Now its time for us to draw first blood. We've had success on the powerplay vs. The Pens this season, so let's do it. Lalbierte, Matsumoto, and Maroon were out with Ratchuk and Curry, followed by Ross's line with Syvret and DeSantis at the next stoppage.
Long story short: we got a ton of shots during that extended PP, but no goal. SOG are now Phantoms 8, Pens 2. Raduns, Clackson, and Szwez came out with Bartulis and D'Amour upon our return to even strength. They're our energy line, and they did create some energy (pus another shot on goal).
This could have been good -- The Pens' Curry juggled the puck when Matsumoto shot it. However, he did manage to get the disk in his mitt before it bouned to the ice, so there was no rebound for Matsy to swat home.
With 9:24 left in the first, SOG: Phantoms 11, Pens 2.
Other than having a lot of opportunities to shoot on net, not much else is going on yet in the game. I like the fact that we have spent the vast majority of the period camped in front of Curry. Oh, NICE check by Clackson, who buried a Penguin behind the W-B net. This was followed by an even nicer poke check from behid by Bartulis, as Jaffrey was breaking in on our goal. One moment he was lining up the cross hairs, the next moment he was skating forward while the puck was moving backward. :) Great shift, guys!
Oh, MAN. There was just an extended scramble in front of our net. Matsumoto's line was battling with the Pens, and the rotten puck wasn't cooperating with them Then again, it wasn't settling down for the Pens either, so maybe it's NOT such a rotten puck. Finally, after a good ten seconds of duelling for it, Matsumoto came up with it and air-dumped the thing halfway to New Jersey. In all that scrambling around, the Pens only got one shot on goal.
We're about to go on some 4 on 4 after a ten-skater scrum at the Zamboni door. There's 5:05 is left in the first period. Ross, Giroux, Syvret, and Guenin are out.
Syvret deflected a shot on our goal, which is good. The bad part is it went right to the OTHER Pen, who was breaking in on our goal. Luckily, the puck stayed airborne long enough that the Pen couldn't really do a whole lot with it. His attempt on our net went wide. Then Kane and Matsumoto, our two forwards, led the rush back to the Pens' end. SCOOOORE -- Matsumoto fed Kane for a goal! :) 1-0 Phatoms!
Kane is back out again, this time with Ross and Giroux, trying to double that lead. This time, it was Giroux ho was stationed at the post looking for rebounds. One thing I've noticed about this line is that ALL of them take turns setting themselves up at the post -- it's not just one or another that stands there, taking abuse and looking for loose pucks.
With 44.3 seconds left, the Phantoms are getting sent to a PK. Matsumoto is sitting. Giroux and Ross are out with Syvret and Guenn.
I would say that Paddock has some issues with the call on Matsumoto. When the period finished, he, Kane, and the referee conferred for a minute or two at our bench.
Then Scott Hartnell came out to lead the Glove and Mitten Toss. :)
The SOG at the end of the period are Phantoms 14, Penguins 8. We will have 1:16 left of penalty time to kill off at the start of the second period.

Phantoms at Springfield: Game Recap and Box Score
In any event, here's the box score from Friday night's game.
Here's the game recap from the Phantoms site.
The Flyers just handed the NHL Penguins a decisive 6-3 defeat. Here's to seeing the Phantoms do the same to the AHL Penguins on Sunday night!

Phantoms at Springfield 12-12-08: Third Period
The Falcons' task has just gotten more difficult, however, as they have gone shorthanded for the fifth time in the game. We're spending time playing keep-away in our zone, but the Falcons are not set up to generate a shorthanded threat. However, we got very little done during that man advantage -- we took no shots on goal.
Oh, but Ross got a breakaway just after we went back to even strength. WHAT a freaking SAVE by Dubnyk! Darn darn darn, I thought for sure he was going to get a, um, headgear prank. ;) Not this time.
Once again, Springfield was about to go on a powerplay, as Guenin was slated to go to the sin bin for interference. He buried a player at the boards who didn't have the puck. I thought for a moment that we'd end up aat 4 on 4 again, as another Falcon went after Guenin for the hit, but when the dust cleared, only Guenin got the two-minute interference infraction. Springfield is on its third PP of the nght.
They're about to get a long two-man advantage, in fact, as we're about to send another player to cool his heels with Guenin. It's... Shall we say, a marginal call at best.
But the marginality of the call was enough to give Potulny a PP goal against his former teammates. DRAT. I was hoping that Munroe would exit the building with a shutout, but it's not meant to be. At least his fellow Alabama alumnus Ross still has an opportunity to for the headgear prank.
So it's 4-1 now, and Springfield is about to go back on the two-man advantage. The Falcons promptly called a timeout.
OK, so the good news is, we got Kane back so we were at 5 on 4. The bad news is, nearly immediately thereafter, the Falcons scored on a screened shot to make it 4-2. That wasn't how we'd have liked to return to even strength, but what's done is done.
Now we can't seem to get rid of the dratted Falcons -- they're really invigorated and we have about half the period left to go. So far, we've been outshot in this period 9-1. (Two separate two-man disadvantages will do that to a team)
Springfield's video crew has to get these darned ads off the arenavision once play starts. They keep missing the beginning of play, so that the announcer is describing the goings-on on the ice whie we are looking at lists of birthday names or waving Falcons logos.
Springfield is about to take a hooking penalty, so now it's time for the Phantoms to do some PP damage of our own. Let's go, guys. Giroux takes a shot, followed by a shorthanded breakout by the Falcons. They made things interesting in our end for a while, but we finally got the heck back down to Springfield's end. SCOOOORE -- Claude Giroux fires a cannon blast into the net to increase our lead to 5-2. We hae 6:40 left in the period. Whew. These past few minutes of the game have been blood-pressure-raising.
I think the Falcons have spent more time in front of Munroe in this period so far than they did in the first two periods combined. Fortunately, we're down to the final minute of the game, so we'll just have to play a sensible game for another sixty seconds of game time. If we avoid boneheaded mistakes or needless penalties, we should be in good shape.
There's the final horn! The Phantoms have won the game, 5-2.
Stars:
#3: Falcons #21 (I couldn't hear his name)
#2: Phantoms Maroon
#1: Phantoms Jared Ross
Oh, darn AHL Live, they did it again! They cut the freaking transmission off while our annonuncer was right in the middle of giving some stats.   Can't they at least wait until the broadcasters finish speaking and sign off before they end the darn cybercast?
Anyway, the Phantoms are tied at the moment in the standings with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. We are off until Sunday night, when said Pens visit the Spectrum. The Penguins played tonight, and will also play on Saturday night before coming to Philly for their third game in three days. I hope that we get a good rest and come out with a lot of energy on Sunday. We need to trounce our in-state rival.
Come on, guys -- we've just won four in a row. Take Sunday and bump that up to five. :) Go Phantoms!
Phantoms at Springfield 12-12-08: Second Period
The Phantoms went onto a PP not long after that, which the fans in Springfield heartily disagree with, as there've been chants of "Ref, you s_ck!" The fans are even unhappier now, as Nate Raduns just scored, assisted by Kalinski and Ratchuk (all rookies) just after the end of the PP. 4-0, Good Guys, and you can hear a pin drop in the Springfield arena right now.
Dang, Dubnyk has made a few really solid stops over the past few minutes. This last one was a nice glove save on Clackson. We have been keeping him busy since that fourth goal, and he has been very much up to the challenge. The shots on goal, about halfway through the second period, are 23-11 Phantoms.
We spent a few hair-raising moments fending off Falcons' scoring chances, but fortunately for us, Munroe and his teammates combined to keep the puck out. Muny did the chief part of the work, but even our forwards were pitching in to deflect shots away from the net.
We are about to go shorthanded, to the sarcastic applause of some fans. This may be the first time we've gone shorthanded in the game, which could explain why the fans are on the ref's case. Yep -- the only other time we were going to be shorthanded, Lefebvre retaliated and turned a Falcons PP into a 4-on-4. It took the Falcons quite a while to get set up in our zone, but once they did, they earned some of our best chances of the game. Moreover, we got lucky, as the Falcons kept the puck so long during a delayed penalty, they missed out on having a 5 on 3 because our penalty to Maroon expired. So we're basically now killing two 5-on-4 situations in a row. The Falcons played keep-away during the delayed penalty when Raduns wanted to take possession. Then they must have realized that cycling the puck was doing them more harm than good, so they TRIED to get a Phantom to take possession of the puck. They shot it toward Kane, but he's a veteran and knew enough not to take the bait. That's why by the time a Phantom finally did get the puck and play stopped, the teams were at even strength again.
The Phantoms soon went on our fourth PP of the game, however, in the final two minutes of the second period. Dubnyk proceeded to keep our attempts out of the net, but when the Falcons got a shorhanded 2 -on-1 break, they shot wide, so fortune was on our side on that one.
Ross/Kane/Giroux were on the ice in the final 15 seconds of the period. Ross came oh-so-close to getting, um, a headgear prank ;), but it wasn't meant to be. The score at the end of the second period is Phantoms 4, Falcons 0. The Phantoms got 15 shots on goal during the second period, for a total of 28. The Falcons registered 6 SOG during the second, for a total of 13.
I have a feeling that Springfield's coach is going to be bending an ear or two during the second intermission, given the disparity in shots and scoring chances, and also for the fact that no one realized that they were frittering away a chance to have a two-man advantage during that extended delayed penalty.
The Phantoms are aware, I'm sure, of the Flyers' huge comeback in last night's game, when they rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win 6-5 in a shootout. So we are, or should be, aware that even a four-goal lead can evaporate in the course of one period, and we will have to keep on playing like we mean it and want to put the Falcons out of the game for keeps.
Here's to a third period that's as solid as the first two were.
Phantoms at Springfield, 12-12-08; First Period
During the ensuing PP, I still don't know HOW Dubnyk kept the one particular stuff attempt at the right post from being cashed in. Oh, doggone, but that was close. The Phantoms are great at getting someone stationed right AT the net, which is how some of our guys have tallied a good number of points this year.
The PP is over, and the game is still scoreless. However, we are outshooting the Falcons 4-0.
Kalinski and Bellamy, are on a line with what looked like a player wearing #9, in which case it would be Raduns.
Clackson is in a fight with Benson.Clackson threw a whole lot of lefts -- more than Benson threw rights, though they were both swinging away for all they were worth. Clackson also got the Falcon's jersey most of the way over hs head. The zebras are checking his jersey to see if it had been tied down prior to the fight, as it certainly didn't appear to be fastened to anything by the time the fight was over. Benson was neither ejected nor given an extra penalty, so apparently the loose jersey was deemed not to have been an infraction.
While I was typing this, the Phantoms got a PP and Ross scored, in short order. :) Assists went to Maroon and (former Falcon) Syvret. We have some Falcons alumni on OUR roster, including Syvret and Kane.
With 8:02 remaining in the period, the Phantoms are outshooting Springfield 9-2.
Dubnyk had to make a darn nice save to prevent Ross from earing a second tally in this period. Then the teams made their way to the Phantoms' end of the ice, and it was Munroe's turn to make a good stop.
OK, we have spent the next few shifts mostly in front of Munroe, and I'm not happy about it. FINALLY, Laliberte and his linemates, Matsumoto and Maroon, got us the heck out of our zone. Laliberte took it in front of the Falcons net, and in the mad scramble that followed somehow the puck went in. Our announcer was wondering if it went in off a defenseman, but in any case the goal was credited to Laliberte, with an assist by Maroon. 2-0, Good Guys. :)
Thank you, Sean Curry, who threw a hit just as a Falcon was about to take a dangerous shot on goal. The shot missed the net as a result. That'd have been a point-blank scoring chance if the disk hadn't gone wide.
I don't think that second goal is sitting well with Dubnyk. He made a save and froze the puck just a bit farther from the net than most goalies tend to these days. Only his feet were in the crease. But he saw a Phantom (Matsumoto) heading to the net, so Dubnyk decided that discretion was the better part of valor.
We just found out that the reason Raduns was out of the lineup was to have a broken nose treated. He actually broke it in November, but for various and sundry reasons, the treatment was delayed a few days. Also, Josh Gratton is out with a lower body injury.
OH, three cheers for crashing the net! Kane and Ross did the honors; Kane got dumped to the ice by a defenseman but even so, they kept at it and the puck got in with 2.7 seconds remaining in the period. NICE NICE NICE Ross scored, assisted by Giroux and Kane.
The Phantoms lead the Falcons 3-0 at the end of the first period. WTG, guys!

The latest unofficial info on where the Phantoms will go: Bellmawr
Perhaps this article is about one of those six sites. Frank couldn't tell us more than "there are six sites", as the process of investigation was nowhere near far enough along for details to be made public.
In any event, CLICK HERE for a blog post about a potential site in Bellmawr, NJ, near the I-42/I-295 interchange.
Spectrum Arena and Bass Pro Shop in Bellmawr, NJ - Update
December 06, 2008 • 5:46 pm
By Adam Monacelli
The site for the proposed Bellmawr waterfront arena project is near the Route 42-Interstate 295 interchange.
By ADAM SMELTZ • Courier-Post Staff
A Bellmawr developer has proposed that an arena to replace the Wachovia Spectrum could take shape in the borough, near the Route 42-Interstate 295 interchange, Mayor Frank Filipek said Friday.
The firm, Develcom, has already undertaken a multi-year commercial development project at the property, which borders the southwest edge of the interchange. New revisions to those plans, posted on the project Web site at www.bellmawrwaterfront.com, suggest a major arena could be incorporated there just east of Big Timber Creek.
Other elements in the published plans include hotels, retail space and a large cinema, all outlined by Develcom.
Filipek said the development firm made its new-arena pitch to the Spectrum’s owner, Comcast-Spectacor, which plans to tear down the South Philadelphia landmark next year.
A meeting to gauge Comcast-Spectacor’s interest should happen sometime in the coming weeks, Filipek said. He said he and representatives from Develcom and Comcast-Spectacor are expected to attend.
“It’s a great proposal,” Filipek said.” . . . I’ve heard they’re very interested in Bellmawr.”
He said he has “really never thought about” what the project could mean for the borough.
“I’m not going to think about it until it comes to reality,” Filipek said. “. . . Until (Comcast-Spectacor) says they’re definitely coming — then I will say what it means for Bellmawr.”
Under an agreement with the Camden County Improvement Authority, Develcom cannot speak with reporters about the matter and must refer inquiries to the authority, said company President Charles Gollub.
Authority Executive Director Frederic Weinstein declined to comment Friday.
“If or when the appropriate time comes, we’re happy to share any and all information with the press and the community,” Gollub said.
Comcast-Spectacor, based in Philadelphia, announced in July that it will demolish the 41-year-old arena, a popular concert venue and home to the Philadelphia Phantoms hockey team.
Since the announcement, Comcast-Spectacor executives have said they need to find a new venue to host the Phantoms. Chairman Ed Snider has said such an arena should seat at least 7,000 fans in order to accommodate the American Hockey League team.
But to attract concerts, an arena’s total capacity would need to be more than that, Snider has said.
Comcast-Spectacor did not comment Friday specifically on the Bellmawr prospect. In a prepared statement sent to the Courier-Post, company President Peter Luukko said the group is in talks with multiple groups about relocating the Phantoms.
The company “is not building a new arena,” Luukko said. “However, if someone is building a new arena, we would like to talk to them about potentially moving the Phantoms there.”
He said the company has held “very preliminary discussions about sites in South Jersey. At this time, there is nothing definitive.”
In September, Cherry Hill Township spokesman Dan Keashen said his municipality was “cautiously excited to be considered a prospective location.” In August, Luukko said Atlantic City and the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania also were among the possibilities.
Reached Friday, county Freeholder-Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said he understands Comcast-Spectacor reviewed several Camden County sites, including ones in Bellmawr, Cherry Hill and Winslow.
He said such a new venue would be an asset for the area.
“We don’t really have a facility that can accommodate several thousand people in Camden County or the region,” Cappelli said. He said the addition could help attract conferences and other major events.
Real-estate executive Eliott Fuhrman, once involved in the Garden State Park development talks in Cherry Hill, said a new arena would probably require a partnership of public and private entities.
“It really has to be a public-private partnership,” said Fuhrman, general partner in Maryland-based Glencoe and Associates. “Financially, a convention center or a stadium cannot be self-sustaining, especially in today’s economy, because there’s no access for funding. It has to be public-private.”
Fuhrman also said a new arena would probably be a better fit in Pennsauken — at the old Pennsauken Mart site — than it would be in Bellmawr. He said the Pennsauken site would plant the arena closer to Philadelphia and its hockey fans, and offer more opportunities for additional redevelopment surrounding the arena.
“Let’s face it: You go right down Haddonfield Road (from Pennsauken), and you’re at the Cherry Hill Mall,” Fuhrman said. “People could go to dinner before or after” events.

Darroll Powe scores his first NHL goal
The Phantoms Weekly Release is here!
Then there's Sunday's home game, which has a promo that makes me laugh -- the Scott Hartnell Glove and Mitten Toss. :D Fortunately, he's a good sport about his gauntlet-flinging miscue, and he'll be signing autographs for fans prior to the game.
We've beaten the Pens rather handily in our last couple of meetings, so they're going to be gunning for us, too. Here's to seeing us do as well at home vs. the Pens as we've done in our last two road trips there. THAT would make for a fun night for Phantoms Phans, for sure. :)
Go, Phantoms!

Phantoms at Wilkes-Barre 12-07-08: A weekend to be proud of
Scott Munroe was the starting goalie in all three games, and he earned all three wins. Clearly, he and the rest of the team have done a great job in showing that the Hershey game was an anomaly.
Here's the box score of Sunday's game -- read it and rejoice. :)
And here is the game recap on the Phantoms site. What a nice way to wrap up the weekend. Great job, guys.

Phantoms vs. Bnghamton 12-06-08: Third Period
Speaking of Ross's line, Ross just crashed the net at about 90 miles an hour. This earned him the privelege of getting flattened behind the Sens net, causing a ten-skater shoving match in front of Elliot. The Phantoms drew a powerplay out of the deal, we are busy trying to make them pay where it counts: on the scoreboard. Binghamton took a page from our book and tried to get a shorthanded opportunity, but it came to nothing. Ross and his line are out again, and we just clanged one off the iron. Bah, it would've been nice to see Ross avenge himself on that shift. That's OK, we have 9:05 remaining in the period to do the Payback Thang. ;) SOG Phantoms 25, Senators 19.
Guenin blocked a shot. Again. Honest to gosh, he's got more chutzpah than anyone I've seen in a long time, where laying out in front of a flying puck is concerned.
We are seeing a lot of Kalinski/Clackson/Szwez in the waning minutes of the game. Clearly the goal is to keep the Senators from getting scoring chances.
Unfortunately, with three minutes and change remaining in the period, Sean Curry gets sent off for delay of the game. That rule is a nuisance, I swear it. So Kane, Kalinski, Guenin, and Syvret are out. Fortunately, with 42 seconds left in our penalty, Zubov of the Sens gets sent off for slashing, so there goes their PP. We'll be at 4 on 4 for a while, then on the PP for most of the remainder of the game. (Presuming no other calls get made, that is.)
With about two minutes remaining, Binghamton pulled their goaltender, so they now have five skaters to our 4, with an empty net. Maroon is on the ice, and I would love to see him get, er, a bunch of free hats from the fans. Now our guy is back from the sin bin, we're on the PP, and Maroon just scored the empty net goal for his HAT TRICK :) :) :). Yeah, talk about earning the first star of the game -- the man has figured in ALL FIVE of our goals tonight. Assists went to Kane and Munroe. Jonathan Matsumoto collected the puck for Maroon. :) Moments after play resumed, the Phantoms returned to the PP with about half a minute remaining in the game.
Our stars of the game were:
#3 Guenin
#2 Ross
#1 Maroon
On to Wilkes-Barre tomorrow, to take on some Pens! Go Phantoms!
Phantoms vs. Binghamton 12-6-08: Second Period
Back to our game. Jeff Szwez opened the period with a NICE hit on a Bingo puck carrier behind the Sens net. :) I like Szwez -- he's scored at some key times this season, he hits, and though his fight record has got both Ws and Ls, he's willing to drop the gloves as needed.
Speaking of people who are willing to take one for the team, Laliberte is back out. I'm not sure how much repair work they had to do on him, but he's on the ice with Matsumoto and Maroon. The D are Bartulis and D'Amour.
Giroux just came charging into the Bingo zone, shadowed by two Senators, and surprised me with his patience. Instead of shooting on net with nobody around to help him out, he did a circle and waited for Ross to arrive. Then Claude passed the puck to HIM instead of takng the shot himself, as he still was being spotted by two defenders. Nice. Ross got a point-blank shot on goal, but unfortunately the puck remained out
Double drat. The Senators just made an east-west play in front of Munroe that resulted in a goal. Drat 'em. The score is 3-2, Phantoms. SOG Phantoms 13, Senators 11. We're nearly nine minutes into the period, so I'm not pleased that we've only gotten one puck on Elliot all period long.
Giroux just came inches, literally, from scoring. ARGH, so close! Elliot mostly stopped the puck, but it got behind him and rolled slowly through the crease. Sorry to say, it rolled past the post and out of harm's way. Moments later, Kane was called for goaltender interference (GEE, maybe those two Sens hounding him helped a bit there), so we are on the PK now.
With 57 seconds left in our PK, a Senator takes a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and now it's 4 on 4. The SOG are even at 13 apiece.
This PP has been pretty solid so far. We came close to scoring twice, and Ross is making the Sens bananas. So much so, in fact, that we are about to have 13 seconds of 5-on-3 PP time. Yay, us. :) But that line has been out for eons, so Mtsumoto, Maroon, and aliberte are out with Ratchuk and CUrry for the second PP unit. Maroon is stationed at the net to clean up rebounds. No wonder he had three points in the first period. :)
Giroux just took a poke at Regin, after the two of them exchanged words. Regin went to poke back but immediately found our captain Boyd Kane in his face. So that little dispute was rapidly defused. Temporarily, anyway, as when the shift ended, there was a ten-skater conference behind the Phantoms net. The game's getting feisty. We have four minutes and change left in the period, and I would like to see us come back to the Bingo end of the ice... We've spent a bit more time in our end in the past few minutes than I'd like to see.
Ross/Kane/Giroux must have heard me typing, because they carried the puck down here and nearly scored again. Oh, if only there'd been a white-clad player near that rebound! Guenin also took a blast from the point that Elliot had to freeze.
Nice shot, Clackson! :)
The fnal minute of this period has been pond hockey -- end to end to end and back again. Finally, the back-and-forth ended with 9.4 seconds remaining in the period, when the Senators took a penalty. We had a great flurry in those final seconds, particularly Laliberte who came close to ending our PP with a goal, but the period ended. We will have 1:51 remaining of PP time when the third period starts. The score of the game is Phantoms 3, Senators 2, and the SOG are Phantoms 19, Senators 18.
Phantoms vs. Binghamton 12-06-08: First Period
The rest of our starting lineup is comprised of Guenin, Syvret, Ross, Kane, and Giroux.
Wow... The first shift of the game ended with a whistle stopping play for something you RARELY, if ever, see aymore. Players were battling with one another along the boards for the puck, and it was pinned to the dashers by a myriad of skates. I can't even remember the last time I saw play stopped under those circumstances instead of seeing the ref tell the players to move the puck
On the second shift of the game, the puck was pinned at our boards, instead of behind the Bingo net... and there goes another whistle, this time because Jason DeSantis was being called for holding. So there goes our first PK of the game. Kane and Kalinski are on the ice with Syvret and Guenin. The next PK forward pairing is Ross/Giroux.They proceeded to break out and attempt a shot (that didn't reach the net, apparently, since it's not counted on the shot clock). Then they picked off a Sens pass, which nearly allowed them to garner another shorthanded scoring chance. Kane and Kalinski did manage to pick up a SH scoring opportunity.
Back at even strength, Bellamy and Szwz are out with Ross, Curry, and Ratchuk.
I have yet to see Gratton's line on the ice long enough for me to pin down which other forwards are out with him. This time, instead of DeSantis going to the sin bin, it's Gratton. However, within seconds, Ross/Giroux broke in on Bingo's net, causing a Senator to blatantly trip Ross. IMO, that could have been a penalty shot, but instead we got a tripping call out of the deal and we are at 4 on 4. Laliberte and Matsumoto are out with Guenin and Syvret. Matsy make some nice maneuvers to get all the way down to a position near Bingo's net, but somehow the puck got centered to nobody and headed all the way down to our end. Munroe came WAY out to the top of the slot to fire it back to our guys, and we tried again. Round Two of "Let's try to score on the Sens" earned us 23 seconds' worth of 5-on-3 PP, followed by whatever will be left on #3's penalty if we don't score.
YEAH -- we put the puck in while it's 5-on4, and 1:34 was left on our PP. Great job, guys! That was Maroon, assisted by Ross and Syvret. We also took the lead on the shot clock with that goal -- we're now outshooting Bingo 6-5.
Bellamy and Szwez are out with Matsumoto now, earning us an offensive-zone faceoff. Oh, and now I can see that Gratton is with Kalinski and Clackson, the same line as last night.
Ratchuk is out with Curry, and Ross's line is on the ice. We're doing a good job of breaking up Binghamton's rushes in the neutral zone. We look like we're playing the same style now as we did toward the end of last night's game, where we were clogging up the ice so Hartford couldn't get past our blue line.
GEESH, Laliberte just took some damage in the corner -- no penalty appears to be getting called, but hes spitting out blood. Ouch, poor guy. He and the trainer headed up the tunnel.
NOW a Senator is headed into the box for high-sticking, a few seconds' worth of play later.
Kane, Giroux, and Ross go out with Syvret and DeSantis. And with 52 seconds left on the PP, we increase the lead to 2-0! :) This time, it's Ross from Maroon and DeSantis. (That's TWICE I didn't notice when Maroon came on for Giroux. The other time, it was Maroon's goal. Then again, as long as our boys are giving us goals to notice, I won't worry about seeing one guy come on in place of another. )
SOG at the time of our second goal: Phantoms 8, Sens 5. So we scored twice on three shots.
Boy, it's nice to see the Phantoms set up camp in front of the opposing net for most of a period. We really came out with a lot of jump tonight, and I like it. BIngo just got into our zone, but never got past the ads n the ice before we picked off the puck and headed back to their end and potted an even-strength goal. NICE. JEff Szwez scores, assisted by Matsumoto and Maroon (who's had a three-point first period.)
Jeff Glass, Bingo's starting goalie, has been replaced by Brian Elliot. SOG are Phantoms 12, Binghamton 6, with just under five minutes remaining in the period.
The goaie change appears to have jump-started Binghamton somewhat, as they actually made it down into our end and were tryng to set up. However, play was abruptly halted when a Senator, Regin, collided with one of our guys from behind. I'm still not sure what he did to himself -- I'm thnking maybe he managed to get hit by the butt end of our player's stick -- but he went down to the ice hard. The trainer came out, and he got up after a little while, but no penalties were called for what was, esentially, an accident at the worst.
However, to make a long story less long, Gratton was called for elbowing down at the Sens' end, and about a minute later, we wound up with a 5-on-3 PK. NOW the Sens got their seventh shot on goal, with 1:30 left in the period. BTW, here's a familiar phrase: "Guenin blocked a shot". :)
Crapola. With five seconds remaining in the 5-on-3, Binghamton scored. So Matsumoto is still in the box. Crapola again, because we are at 5 on 4 wit Kane and Kalinski, Bartulis and Curry out and Kane's stick broke. What cruddy timing for that. Fortunately, Munroe froze the puck and we were able to get a line change.
The first period is over -- the score is 3-1, Phantoms. SOG Phantoms 12, Senators 9.
Phantoms vs. Binghamton Senators: Pregame Notes
So far, we've played the Sens twice this season, once in Philly and once in Bingo. Both times, the visiting team won the game. So here's hoping that we become the first home team in the Phantoms/Senators series this season to win at home. (We're perfectly welcome to continue being the victorious road team, when we head up to Binghamton, however. ;) )
Go Phantoms!
Phantoms vs. Hartford: Game Recap and Box Score
Here is the link to the box score. How great are those +/- totals for some of our players? Ross was +4 last night; Kane, Giroux, and Bartulis were all +3. Great job, guys!
Tonight, the Phantoms will be at home again, this time vs. the Binghamton Senators.

Phantoms vs. Hartford 12-05-08: Third Period
Garrett's leaving Philly early in the mornng tomorrow, unfortunately for us, so he won't be on hand for tomorrow night's game. However, he does want to be here for the last game in the Spectrum. I hope to heck we get a lot of alumni and they get honored pregame, when the time comes.
We're down to the final minute of the third period now, and Hartford is pressing pretty hard. We're doing a good job of breaking up their attempts to get set up, however, and clearing the puck out.
There's the final horn -- the Good Guys win! :)
Stars: #3: Anisimov (Hartford); #2: Giroux, #1 Ross.
Phantoms vs. Hartford 12-05-08: Second Period
The good news, however, is that Giroux came streaking up ice with the puck, and took a hard shot that rang off the iron. The rebound went right to Jared Ross, who flipped the puck into the net for an easy goal. Beautiful! So the score is 1-0, Phantoms, thanks to Ross , with assists from Giroux and Syvret.
I can at least forgive our organization for not having Garrett on hand for the first puck drop. I got two text messages, almost simultaneously, from two different people saying that he didn't arrive until the first intermission. Here's hoping we see him on the ice tonight, or maybe even pregame tomorrow since there's a home game on Saturday as well.
Blah, the first penalty of the game, seven minutes and change into the second period, goes to Claude Giroux.
Syvret and Ross came in on a SH 2-on-2 that came close to resulting in a goal. Nice try, guys. I swear, the number 18 in this organization must be reserved for people who are as dangerous on the PK as at even strength. (Richards and Ross).
Unfortunately, Hartford scored on the latter part of their PP, causing the three fans next to me to start howling. I suppose they're WolfPack fans.
With 9:11 left the Phantoms strike again, hallelujah! Ross is EN FUEGO tonight. Assist: Matt Clackson (with his buddy Garrett in the building to see it, :) ). The score is 2-1. SOG: Phantoms 14, Hartford 19.
KANE makes it 3-1. This line is on fire, not just Ross! :) Giroux and Syvret assisted. Great job, guys!
We're about to go on our first PP. One thing about this ref: he's letting the teams play. Nice. Kane, Giroux, Ross are out with DeSantis and Syvret. Considering that ALL the guys who are responsible for our three goals are out on the ice, this is a good choice (even though they're our first PP unit anyway). We didn't score on that PP, but we are closing in on the shot clock (Phantoms 19, Hartford 21).
Oh, and there goes a penalty against the Phantoms. Curry will sit. With four seconds left on the man advantage, Hartford scores on a rebound to narrow their deficit to one goal. Drat. 3-2 Phantoms.
And with half a minute left in the period, the ref's arm is up and we're about to go shorthanded yet again. This time it's Ratchuk who goes. Kane and Kalinski are out with Syvret and Guenin.
At the end of the second period, SOG are Phantoms 19, Hartford 30. The score is 3-2 Phantoms, and we have 1:30 of PK remaining at the start of the third period.
